You may be able to apply for naturalization and become a U.S. Citizen if you are or above 18 years of age and satisfy one of the following requirements: 1. You have received permanent residency and lived in the U.S. for at least 5 years; 2. You are the spouse of a U.S. Citizen and have lived in the U.S. for at least 3 years; or 3. You are a permanent resident, have served in the U.S. military, and have been in the U.S. for at least 3 years. In addition, you must prove that you have a good knowledge of U.S. history and government, are able to read, write, and speak in English, and have a good moral character. Becoming a naturalized citizen can be complex for those with residency issues, criminal charges or convictions, or other eligibility problems. Talk to an experienced immigration lawyer before you start the process to avoid problems later.
